Elixir of Health: Lemon and Turmeric Drink

I have always had a great love for turmeric, as it has been used medicinally in Ayurveda for many many years. It has amazing anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to treat an array of ailments ranging from arthritis to menstrual issues to allergies.

Adding black pepper to turmeric increases the absorption by 2000%. Amazing right?

Ginger is another root that I love, as it is very warming and can soothe and balance an upset stomach. It is perfect for the colder months, and is especially great for relieving any type of abdominal cramps–digestive or menstrual.

Lemons are a powerhouse of vitamin C and are very alkalizing to the body. They help strengthen the body’s natural immune system, while also preventing disease. Did you know that cancer cannot exist in an alkaline environment?

Cayenne helps to clear phlegm from the body, which is perfect for this time of year when flu season tends to creep up on us.

Here is a recipe for an elixir that I like to drink every morning. It leaves me feeling rejuvinated and ready for my day.

Enjoy.

1/4 tsp. turmeric
1/4 tsp. ginger powder
a pinch of cayenne pepper
a pinch of black pepper
juice of 1 lemon freshly squeezed
1 TB raw honey (preferably local and organic) or grade B maple syrup if Vegan
warm water

Combine the first five ingredients together in a mug. Then I fill the mug 1/3 full of room temperature water. Then I fill the rest of the mug with boiling water (I do this so that it isn’t too hot and won’t ruin the medicinal properties of the lemon and honey). Then stir in the honey until it is fully combined. Drink and enjoy the benefits.
